Breaking News: 37 Food Items That Will Be Sold Out…

Why should you keep these foods in your house at all times? Well, it is always better to be prepared than not. You never know when the next hurricane, tornado or even winter storm will hit your area. Trust me you do not want to be one of those people, rushing to the grocery store to stock up in the final hours. Only to find that most of the stuff your family needs for survival, is no longer available. Be the smart one, have your stockpile ready and waiting for any disaster or emergency situation.

16 Survival Foods You Should Always Have At Home

.

Survival Food #1: Water

This is the most important ‘food’ on your list. Make sure that everyone in your home has at least 1 gallon per day available. It is also recommended that you keep a 72 hours supply for each family member.

You could buy bottled water or alternatively refer to previous posts on canning water for emergency preparedness and also how to store water for the long term.

Survival Food #2: Canned Soups Or Chili

These can provide a full meal in a can, and all you need is an opener to serve them. Check the labels and select those cans with low sodium, they are a healthier option.

Survival Food #3: Canned Fish Or Meat

Your body needs protein, and this is where you will get it from. When stored correctly, you can stock pile these cans for up to 24 months at a time.

Survival Food #4: Whole Grain Cereal

If you were wondering where your carbs and fiber will come from, here is your answer. Instead of buying the family packs, the smaller individual/kids packs are a better choice.

Survival Food #5: Crackers

Not only do crackers make a great snack, they can be used instead of bread to make sandwiches using the canned fish or meat. The best type of crackers to buy are the whole grain or whole wheat, they provide more fiber. If you have a vacuum sealer, use that to pack your crackers and you can extend their shelf life.

Survival Food #6: Canned Fruits And Vegetables

With our protein, carbs and fiber needs already covered these will provide your family with the nutrients that they would normally get from their fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables.

Survival Food #7: Dried Fruit

These are great for snack time. Not only do they provide the same essential nutrients that fresh fruit would provide, you also get a healthy dose of fiber, potassium as well as energy.

Survival Food #8: Nuts Or Trail Mix

When you need a quick energy boost, just help yourself to some nuts and trail mix. Again, as with the cereal, try to get the single serving packages.

Survival Food #9: Granola Or Energy Bars

As the title suggests, these are a good source of quick energy. In most cases, each bar also has a healthy mix of carbohydrates and protein.

Survival Food #10: Pasteurized Or Powdered Milk

Calcium and Vitamin D, especially for the kids will come from this type of milk as it is non perishable and does not have to be stored in your fridge.

Survival Food #11: Canned Juices

In particular, the kind that you find in those small tetra paks with the straw attached to the back of the box. In the absence of fresh fruit, these will provide the required nutrients.

Survival Food #12: Vitamins

Although not really ‘food’ per se, it is still a vital addition to your survival foods list, as just one pill a day can provide all the nutrients you need.

Survival Food #13: Sports Drinks

I probably should have listed these, immediately after water as they pretty much serve the same purpose. However, unlike water that just keeps you hydrated, you also get electrolytes and carbohydrate that give you an energy boost.

Survival Food #14: Baby Food And Formula

If you have any infants or babies in the house, then you need to add these to the list. Funny, enough even adults can enjoy baby food. As far as formula is concerned it is recommended that you use ready to feed formula. If you are going to prepare powdered or concentrated formula, make sure you use bottled or boiled water only.

Survival Food #15: Peanut Butter

Yes, I know this is a strange one but hear me out. Peanut butter does not need to be refrigerated, plus it is a great source of energy, fats as well as proteins. Smear it on those crackers, and you have a finger licking awesome snack.

Survival Food #16: Salt, Pepper & Sugar

This one is for your taste buds, they need some love too in an emergency situation. Use these at your discretion to improve the taste of any of the food that you may end up eating. The first few hours or days you may still have access to fresh food, throw that on your grill and season it with your spices.

That’s all folks. There’s the full list, now go shopping! 🙂
