Often in a survival situation one of the very first things you are taught to do, is to build or find shelter. Well now you won’t have to worry about that if you have your own diy garbage bag shelter, in your survival kit or bag.

It is a super cheap solution, lightweight, waterproof and is compact enough to be taken anywhere. You may want to carry a few bags each one a different color, for different conditions. For example, if you want to be found easily an orange or brightly colored bag would be perfect. Contractor grade bags work best for this.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

You will need to practice how to use this emergency shelter properly. Practice cutting the slit with your survival knife. The ideal area to make this cut, is about 5 inches from any one corner on the closed side. Locate the seam and cut at a 90 degree angle.

The opening should be big enough just to let your head through it. You may want to use two bags with the other one covering your feet and tied around your waist. Also, instead of cutting the bag on location, why not pre-cut it before adding it your kit.
