Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • dried river cane
  • piece of wood
  • survival knife
  • multi tool (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Cut a section of your river cane. One side cut at the joint
so it is still sealed, and the other side beyond the joint.

Step 2.

Make a mark about an inch from the hollow end. Cut into the
cane until you get into the center of it.

Step 3.

Cut a diagonal line, across away from the initial cut and
clean any debris that may have found itself into the center.

Step 4.

Cut a piece of wood about the same size as the length between
the cane edge and the hole you just made in the cane.

Step 5.

Use your knife to flatten one side of the piece of wood,
and then insert it with the flat side on the top.

Adjusting the pitch of the whistle is done, by either
shaving more off the piece of wood, or pushing it in further

Instead of using river cane, you can also use bamboo or
bone to make your whistle. If you can’t find one with a
sealed end, just use one of your fingers instead. These whistles can be used for rescues or emergencies.
