Ok, so I thought today we steer away from the finding water in an emergency or survival situation, and try concentrate on some food instead. It just so happened that I know this homemade survival hardtack recipe, that you can easily make in your kitchen.

This easy recipe is centuries old and only requires 3 ingredients. Several armies in the American civil war and sailors in those days relied on this as food source. It is essentially just a very hard dense biscuit, cracker or some may even call it bread. It is great for survival situations because it can store for months or even years.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • whole wheat flour
  • water
  • salt (optional)
  • mixing bowl
  • rolling pin
  • fork
  • knife or biscuit cutter
  • cookie baking sheet
  • ziplock bags

All you have to do is mix the flour and the water in the mixing bowl, until you make a dough that is not too sticky and is workable with a rolling pin. The best way to do this is to slowly add your water into the flour and then stop when you think your dough is just right.

If you are going to add some salt, go ahead and dissolve it in the water. Sprinkle a little flour on your kitchen counter and then roll out the dough until it is about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch thick. Then take your knife or biscuit cutter and cut out the biscuits. Recommended size is 3 X 3 inches.

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F. Prick each one with a fork, to help it cook evenly and not rise. Place the cut biscuits on your non greased but lightly floured cookie sheet and bake initially for 30 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool, before storing in air tight ziploc bags or large cookie jars.
